Tyler has known Katie for a while working with her in D.C. It really is great when other working relationships turn into new opportunities. So when she asked if we'd travel down to West Palm Beach to photograph her elopement there was no other answer for us but, "YES!" We love to travel and Florida in December is a beautiful thing! Katie + Ray's day started with a warm sunset session by the ocean with the softest colors in the sky and finished with a fun, goofy, all out party.
Traveling for work can be tricky. There are the travel expenses and accommodations and how do you compete with talent in the area that might not have those requirements and know the lay of the land a little better? It's the personal connection between photographer and client that can truly make all the difference. Katie and Ray knew us, knew our style, our work ethic, and could trust us to work with them and make them feel at ease. Similarly we had already photographed Katie and Ray for their engagement photos so we knew what kind of photos they like, we knew how to pose them just right and so meeting up in West Palm was like getting the band back together in one of the most beautiful places this time of year. Its easy to get great photos when the clients feel comfortable and familiar. When you trust who is behind the camera you're not so self conscious and you're not worried about the day is getting documented. A familiar face and peace of mind can go a long way on a day where you want nothing to go awry.
My favorite photos from the day are the ones by the ocean at the clocktower. The wind was a lot at that moment but I love the movement it gave to Katie's dress. The shutter speed was just slow enough to capture some motion blur in the fabric while Katie and Ray stood still. From the color of the sky to the color of the stone, the palette of these images is just so dreamy. The diffused light helps too.
Elopements tend to be small, special events with just the essentials and sometimes a little celebration with a tight knit crew. We were so lucky and so happy to be included in Katie and Ray's celebration. The day was a dream to capture with a beautiful location and a familiar crew to photograph. We'll gladly go back to West Palm Beach any day.
